School Counsellor
Counselling services are offered for students from grades 8 through to grade twelve. Counselling can be either individually or in groups.
How do students access the counsellor?
1. They can come to an SST or administration and ask to be able to see the counsellor. Parents and caregivers of students under 18 years of age will be contacted for permission and a referral can be signed either electronically or on paper.
2. Parents and Caregivers can ask about the service and we'll follow the same process as about.
3. Sometimes staff members recommend this to students, and in that case they call parents for a signature as well.
What might a school counsellor do to help?
-They might talk with students and advise them on how to handle situations.
-They might talk about different strategies and tools for different things such as tools to manage anxiety, focus, improving sleep habits, mental health etc...
- They might help students self-manage and self-regulate emotions. Think about the movie Inside Out. Everyone has different emotions at the control and they might help students to balance those emotions through their teenage years.
Sometimes things happen in high school. They help mediate conflict and make plans with students to help manage conflict.
They might also make a referral to specialized therapy.
They might talk things over with parents and caregivers. This might help parents and teachers understand the child better so the team can all work together. It also might help parents to talk through a situation.
